Professional experience
James brings over two decades of experience across competitive and pet dog training and holds genuine standing in the wider canine profession. Since 2003 he has trained and mentored a large number of handler teams across a wide span of disciplines, and he specialises in working with challenging breeds and complex behaviour modification cases, which is precisely the work that many trainers decline. A seasoned competitor across multiple dog sports, he has served as Training Director for several prominent competition clubs and has developed training programs that have produced success for a considerable number of teams. His expertise is recognised internationally, and he has been invited abroad to deliver seminars and workshops for K9 handlers, police departments and dog sport trainers, sharing both deep technical knowledge and hard practical experience. He also served for more than five years as Vice President of the American Police and Protection Dog Association, a role in which he helped shape professional standards across the protection dog community.
A little bit about me
The distinction worth drawing for owners is that James operates comfortably at both ends of the spectrum. He trains elite working dogs where the margin for error is minimal, and he helps ordinary families live well alongside a pet, and he brings the same technical rigour to both. Two decades of competition, mentoring and international teaching mean he has encountered most problems a dog can present, usually more than once, and he has the diagnostic ability to identify what is actually driving a behaviour rather than treating the symptom. His leadership roles within professional bodies reflect the regard other trainers hold him in, which is a useful signal for owners trying to assess credibility. Whatever the scale of the task, James has the experience and the ability to help.
